Brookfield Zoo’s 4-Month-Old Gorilla Has a Name with Honor

The wait is over. After two weeks of asking for the public’s help in naming a 4-month-old female gorilla infant at Brookfield Zoo, the Chicago Zoological Society announced the winning name: Nora, which means “honor” or “light.” More than 70,000 votes were cast online during the voting period, which ran from February 18 through March 3.  more...

Brookfield Zoo Asking Public to Help Name 4-Month-Old Gorilla Baby

On November 4, 2013, a very special birth occurred at Brookfield Zoo: a female western lowland gorilla was born to 18-year-old mom Koola. But the inquisitive little great ape still does not have a name. Grey Seal Born at Brookfield Zoo

The Chicago Zoological Society, which manages Brookfield Zoo, is happy to announce its first birth of 2014: a grey seal pup that also happens to be the first of its species ever born at the zoo. The male pup was born on New Year’s Day around 7:00 a.m. He and his mother, Lily, 10, will remain off exhibit for several weeks to allow them time to bond with one another.  more...

Sarasota Dolphin Research Program Helps in Analysis of Oil Spill on Dolphins

A study was released yesterday that shows a clear link between dolphin illnesses and the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The study compared the health of dolphins living in an area hit hard by the spill to the health assessment of dolphins that are part of the Chicago Zoological Society’s Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, which is the world’s longest-running study of a wild dolphin population.  more...
