Four Galápagos tortoises—the world’s largest living tortoise species—now call Brookfield Zoo home. But these four cute reptiles, currently known as Nos. 3269, 3270, 3271, and 3272 (and color coded orange, yellow, white, and pink respectively), are in need of names. The Chicago Zoological Society (CZS), which manages the zoo, is now asking children ages 11 and younger to help name the tortoises through a contest that will take place from February 18 through March 12, 2010.

Great Bear Wilderness—the newest exhibit at Brookfield Zoo—will open to the public on May 8, 2010. CZS will present four inspiring lectures that highlight some of the iconic animals featured in the exhibit—polar bears, grizzly bears, bald eagles, and bison.

Today, February 2, a crowd of nearly 300 guests gathered in Brookfield Zoo’s Children’s Zoo and waited in anticipation for the two furry forecasters—Cloudy and Tumbleweed—to make an appearance from their winter quarters.

2010 marks the 40th year of dolphin research through the Dolphin Research and Conservation Institute (DRCI), supported by the Chicago Zoological Society. Based in Sarasota, FL, DRCI conducts the world’s longest-running study of a wild dolphin population, focusing on many aspects of dolphin biology, including health, behavior, genetics, environmental change, and adverse interactions with humans.

More than 350 photos featuring polar bears, tigers, butterflies, lizards, and many other creatures of the animal kingdom were submitted for the Chicago Zoological Society’s 2009 Photo Contest. A panel of professional photographers had the tough assignment of selecting a grand prize winner, as well as first-, second-, and third-place winners in the adult and child categories. The winning photos are on display in Brookfield Zoo’s Discovery Center lobby through mid December 2009.
