Blanding's Turtle Project
It takes teamwork to help threatened species, and Brookfield Zoo is happy to play ball. Partnering with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Wheation’s Cosley Zoo, and the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, a reintroduction effort is underway for Blanding’s turtles. A state-threatened species, Blanding’s turtles are the subject of a Turtle Recovery Project in Illinois, under duress from a loss of habitat. The project will be geared toward reintroduction of the species to local wetlands, and the zoo will take part in breeding the turtles and raising them until they can be released into area marshes. At Brookfield Zoo, you can currently find Blanding’s turtles in Herp Homes at Hamill Family Play Zoo.
