Interns in this area will have the opportunity to work closely with aniaml care specialists to learn husbandry practices and management of a variety of primates. As one of the largest indoor mixed-species exhibits in the world, Tropic World represents the tropical rain forests of South America, Asia, and Africa. This unique facility is home to many species of primates and mammals with a total of eight different animal runs. Interns serving a term of 12 weeks will work with Primate Department keepers in most areas of Tropic World. Duties will include enclosure maintenance, food preparation, routine animal observations, and daily interactions with the public. Interns work closely with Primate Department staff to learn about animal husbandry, positive reinforcement training, mixed-species exhibits, and tropical rainforest conservation.

Through close work with with Primate Department staff and with understanding of suggested reading materials, interns receive practical experience in animal care duties and learn many aspects of tending to animals in professional care. Interns will become versed in animal husbandry, mixed-species exhibits, exhibit maintenance, record-keeping, diet preparation, and tropical rainforest conservation. Interns will also be introduced to animal training through positive reinforcement and have the opportunity to hone their observational skills.

As part of their experience, interns will be required to design, implement, and complete a research project that will be developed alongside their mentor and colleagues.
